Amsterdam is an iconic European city, with so much culture and history to explore. Attracting visitors from all over the world, Amsterdam keeps people coming back for more. With its friendly locals and great safety record, Amsterdam is a great location for a first-time solo trip. If it’s your first visit to the city, take a look at this 2-day itinerary for first timers or get inspiration for your own itinerary here.

Where to Stay – CityHub

Do you want to sample the hostel experience, but aren’t ready to share your sleeping space with strangers and be lulled to sleep by the sound of a hostel party? CityHub is the perfect crossover between a hotel and hostel. Based on the pod hotel concept, each “Hub” sleeps two in a king-size bed, that you either climb up or dive down into. The Hubs are teeny tiny with just enough room to stand and change, but they are ideal as a simple base to explore from. The shared bathrooms are immaculately clean and have an industrial-chic vibe. The best feature has to be the self-serve bar though, open all times of day and night!

When To Visit

Amsterdam is a year-round destination, offering a different experience in each season. The city has a temperate climate, meaning you’ll need to visit in summer if you’re seeking the sun. Even then the warm weather is not guaranteed! In winter, Amsterdam has a different kind of magic, when passing lazy hours in a cosy cafe and browsing the city’s numerous museums are the best way to spend your days.

Getting Around in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is relatively small in comparison to many other European cities, so it’s easy to get around on foot. There’s an excellent public transport network available and visitors can purchase an Amsterdam Travel Ticket valid for 1, 2 or 3 days (from €18 – €30) – ideal for a weekend break. The ticket gives you unlimited access to trams, trains, metro, ferries and GVB-operated buses and also covers your return train journey from Schipol airport to any station in Amsterdam.

Of course, when in Amsterdam you could do as the Amsterdammers do and cycle around the city. There are bike hire shops all over the city centre. But beware – cycling in Amsterdam can be fast and furious. Locals are cycling experts and it shows! More importantly, if you decide to stick to walking, under no conditions should you walk in the cycle lanes, lest you be mown down by a hasty commuter!
